About

Ian Vines

Much of Ian Vines' recent work has focused on exploring relationships between photographic images and everyday objects, or pictorial space and real space, illusion and reality. Photographs are combined with objects which often extend beyond the confines of the image into the surrounding space. Other works use optical devices, such as mirrors or magnifying glasses, to double or distort objects or images. The intention with all these works is to engage the spectator in the process of looking.

The work has been developed within the context of contemporary practice that critically engages with the photographic medium and the nature of the object. It has also grown out of an interest in all sorts of visual trickery, including spatial ambiguities, trompe l'oeil effects and optical illusions.

After studying fine art, Ian Vines worked in galleries and museums, devising and organizing exhibitions, residencies and commissions. More recently, he has concentrated on developing his own work.  He is a member of CG Associates, Manchester and was recently part of bOlder, Greater Manchester's Visual Art Talent Programme. In addition, he has worked on various projects as an independent curator, including the Heatons Arts Trail.
